Being a Scientist

One of our values is Enquiry and nothing shows this more than when our children are being Scientists.  The children develop their skills in questioning, observing and measuring as they explore our world.

The children learn through their science lessons a range of scientific skills through a range of scientific enquiry types- identifying, classifying & grouping; observing over time; pattern seeking; research using secondary sources or comparative and fair testing.

The skills of being a Scientist follow this route-map:

The Lair

Not only do we have fantastic outside grounds and diverse biodiversity including the Farm, we also have our very own Science Lab in ‘The Lair’ In The Lair, the children can conduct their experiments and find the answers to their own inquiries about the world around them.

Enrichment Opportunities

At Oaklands, children benefit from a wide range of enriching scientific experiences designed to inspire curiosity and develop their identity as young scientists.

Across the school, pupils can participate in Play Time Science during break times - an innovative initiative that originated at Oaklands and has since been shared with schools across Europe, promoting scientific exploration beyond the classroom.

Each year, we proudly take part in the Great Science Share, where a team of our young scientists collaborates with and presents their projects to pupils from schools across Kent, developing both their scientific knowledge and communication skills.

We also offer an exciting Science Club, which meets weekly from September 2026, providing further opportunities for hands-on investigation, discovery, and scientific enquiry.

A highlight our our calendar is a two-week cross-curricular DT and Science Festival, culminating in our annual Science Fair. Children apply their scientific knowledge and engineering skills to solve a challenge linked to a theme, with previous topics including space, dinosaurs and fairy tales.
