Being a Cook

Being a Cook

The children will learn the skills required to plan, cook and evaluate meals from their geographical area of study. Each lesson will have a focus on the key hygiene elements that all children need to know as they become more confident working with a variety of foods in our training kitchen.

The children develop their skills of being a cook through the following steps.

Our Being a Cook journey encourages children to develop confidence, creativity and practical cooking skills through a structured learning process.

The journey begins with investigating and tasting food, where children explore a variety of ingredients, flavours and dishes to develop their understanding of food and nutrition.

They then move on to developing their practical skills, learning and refining key techniques such as chopping, mixing, measuring and preparing ingredients safely and effectively.

Once these skills have been secured, children design and create their own cooking assignment, applying what they have learned to produce a finished product that meets a given purpose.

Finally, children evaluate their work, reflecting on the success of their finished product, considering what worked well and identifying how they could improve their cooking and design in the future.

The Beehive

Situated within the real school kitchen, lies our very own training kitchen, ‘The Beehive’.  Here, the children get the opportunity to be chefs.  In here, they learn how to prepare and produce their own tasty treats and meals.

This allows the children to work alongside real cooks as they prepare the meals in the school.  Working alongside, they can learn professional skills for their own meals.
