Being a Musician

A core aspect of Music at Oaklands is expressing individuality and being creative.  While we use others music as stimulus, the children’s own work needs to be individual to them and allow them to express themselves.

Music Thread

Initial question – The initial question that the children will be answering as they develop their skills towards the outcome.

Key Vocabulary – Children revisit previously taught vocabulary and new vocabulary using widgets and engaging activities.

Investigating artist / style of music –Where possible, children will explore an artist from their year group continent and will look at the skills the artist has used, what they like or dislike about the artists work. If a specific artist can not be found for the style or area, they are exploring then they will look at a style of music.

Experiment with and develop skills – Children are taught the skills in small steps and the children will experiment with instruments to explore the skills taught.

Design, make, review and improve- During the design, make, review and improve stage of the thread, children are given the opportunity to design and make a piece of composition or vocal performance. They are then given the time to reflect on their piece of work and make any improvements they feel would improve their work. The children then repeat the process, until they are happy with their work.

Evaluate and share – Children evaluate theirs and their peers work and give feedback. Children are encouraged to share their work with other groups, classes or year groups.

We are very proud of our music tuition at Oaklands. We recognise the importance of music on children and the impact across their entire learning.

We aim to make music a part of every child’s day,  through music played in the school; singing assemblies; Funky Fridays , the children will get to recognise the power of music.  As they build up the skills of being a musician, they will share their performances.  Each year, the children from Years 3-5 get to share their wonderful talents in the ‘Proms in the Field’. The children also get to show off their amazing vocal skills at our local church, during the Christingle event.

As well as class based music learning, every child learns in Key Stage 2 learns to play a musical instrument from specialised music teachers:

Year 3 Ocarina

Year 4 Recorder

Year 5 Recorder

In addition to this, children are able to join additional groups to learn a range of musical instruments.
